In the sixth Hollows book, Rachel learns that playing with demons comes with a heavy price. Rachel's false sense of security that the demon Al is safely locked away is shattered when he appears to her on a shopping trip and tries to kill her. Rachel knows that she can not spend the rest of her life hiding on hallowed ground especially when Al appears to her mother and torments her with the ghosts of her past. Rachel discovers that the person summoning Al will not give up easily and she reluctantly agrees to go into the ever-after to get a sample of Al's demon DNA so that she can twist a curse to change summoning names with him so that Al can no longer be pulled from the ever after. Trent goes with Rachel into the ever-after to get an ancient sample of elf DNA so he can use it to save his dying race. While in the ever-after Rachel learns a startling revelation about the relationship between witches and demons and makes a deal with Al that will keep her loved ones safe and change the future of the demon world.
Harrison is still at the top of her game with the Hollows books and she ups the stakes even further with her current novel. The story is filled with jaw dropping revelations about Rachel’s past, the ties between demons and witches and what Trent's father did to Rachel to make her such a demon magnet. It was a real treat to finally have some of the running plot threads from the previous books finally revealed in this story. My only complaint with the book is that there is still too much wangst going on between Rachel and Ivy. Harrison did work on getting at least some of their relationship problems worked out which is a good thing because Ivy was in danger of becoming one of those annoying background characters that you just wish the author would kill off. I like Ivy and I hope that Harrison lets her do more in future books so that she is isn't just emo vamp.
There were only a few clues revealed about who Kisten's killer might be so I am looking forward to Rachel and Ivy finally tracking down his killer in the next few books. I am also interesting in finding out how the events in The Outlaw Demon Wails will play out. Harrison's books always leave you hungry for more. The next Hollows story will be in the anthology Hotter than Hell coming out this June. Can't wait!
